First Technical Workshop on the Elaboration of a Transitional Education Plan in Syria

The workshop, organized in collaboration with UNICEF, Syria’s Ministry of Education, and the Syrian National Commission for UNESCO, and hosted by the Ministry of Education in Damascus, aimed to launch the process of development of the TEP, using IIEP/GPE methodological approach to transitional education planning. The meeting aimed, in particular, to achieve the following objectives: give a clear picture of the importance and benefits of TEP; present the methodology and steps of the TEP preparation; discuss the issues of educational, demographic, financial and economic data and information required for TEP preparation; build the capacity of the TEP working Groups on the analysis of the education situation in Syria; agree on subsequent steps and define roles.

More than 30 representatives from the Ministry of Education attended this workshop, including vice-ministers and directors-general, as well as key statistics staff.

At the opening of the workshop, Deputy Minister of Education Dr Farah Al Motlak highlighted the importance of relying on thorough methodology study when developing the Mid-term TEP and making the TEP compatible with the Education Plan set by PICC and the Ministry of Education.

In his turn, Dr. Hijazi Ibrahim, Basic Education Programme Specialist at UNESCO Beirut, stressed the importance of cooperation and coordination between the Ministry of Education and the UN and international organizations working in Syria to meet all needs, particularly in regard to the TEP which requires the pooling of experiences and efforts.

As to Mr Charles Nabongo, acting as UNICEF Chief of Education, he expressed the UNICEF’s commitment to support the Ministry of Education to develop the TEP, stressing the importance of developing the Plan based on information, evidence, and data analysis.
